A Field Care Internship is offered at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute from January 2020 to June 2021. The internship is very intense and extremely diverse due to the large volume of horses treated by a practice of over 40 veterinarians and the enormous referral base that Hagyard enjoys. The Internship represents an exceptional learning opportunity for those who wish to sharpen their diagnostic, therapeutic, reproductive management, and decision-making skills that are crucial to well-rounded equine veterinarians. Interns will learn to communicate with and manage clients through a hands-on approach. Rotation will occur in the summer and fall, including time at medicine and surgery. The spring rotations will consist of primarily field work and will involve emergency duties both with and without a senior practitioner.
The objectives of the internship are to allow the participant the opportunity to gain knowledge regarding various reproductive management procedures, general medicine in the field, emergency case management, endoscopic procedures, radiology, international horse sales, and lameness training with strong mentorship.
Typical cases that the Field Care Intern will learn to manage include; herd health, basic and advanced reproductive techniques of the mare and stallion, thoroughbred breeding shed services, dystocia management, post-foaling complications, surgical and non-surgical colic workups, ambulatory medicine cases, laceration repair, critical and emergency care in the field, neonatal foal care and on-farm care of the critical foal, field surgery, sales endoscopy and radiology, regulatory and international requirements for shipping, thoroughbred racetrack performance and lameness medicine and others as available.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate from a college of veterinary medicine and have authorization to practice veterinary medicine in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Applicants are invited to submit a letter of professional interest. The letter should include a statement of career goals and a curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation. Applicant’s letters of intent and letters of recommendation should be addressed to Dr. Ernest Martinez. Please e-mail information to: Jamie O’Flynn at firstname.lastname@example.org.
